Is Fodder Cost Effective?

50# bag of seed can make 120# of fodder (feed)

 

50# bag with shipping is $12.50

 

$0.25 per pound for seed.

 

120lbs (fodder) / $12.50 = $0.10 per lb.

 

For six horses at one bag every 4 days is 8 bags per month = $128.00 per month

 

With fodder I cut down to 3 bags  per month of seed at $12.50 per bag  $12.50 x 3 = $37.50 per month.

 

Savings of $90.00 a month which for me is a cost of a two rolls of hay per month!!! 

 

Let's talk about hay consumption for a minute here:

 

Because fodder is a living food animals digest 80% of the feed vice only digesting 30%.  So if you had a bag of $16 complete feed your horse is popping out $11.20 of that bag of feed and only "eating"  

$4.80!!!  .... ok there is an eye opener!

 

With fodder your furry friend is digesting "eating" $10 of a bag of seed!!  and popping out only $2.50.... huge difference here folks!  

 

So with that being said.... lets go back to the hay...  since your horse is eating (digesting) 80% of fodder he is LESS hungry.... hummm that means LESS hay consumpution.  So don't be surprised if your hay bill is cut in half!
